octopus stereogram by donkeypunchmurphy octopus stereogram by donkeypunchmurphy
so i modeled up this octopus. I decided to go all 90's nostalgia with it and make a stereogram out of it. It's not a difficult procedure, but the values do involve some finesse.

That's so cool, I loved those magic eye books, I had a couple of them. What did you use to make the stereogram? I can do 3d cross eyed photos but don't know how to make these kind. Great job.

I love this. You can see the octopus sitting right there, with one tentacle pointing down, and it looks really real. I wonder how you did the depth mask for this... Choice of background colour was good. Looks like the sea :D

ha. Yeah...int the mapped version, it was a sea shelf with plants, but when you do the z-depth render, it will impose an artificial wall once the z-maximum threshold is crossed. I'm still pretty new at this whole thing, but you should check out 3d-dimka's stuff...he's a stereogram sage.

Nice job, Mario. Good model, depth and composition too. Low-detail texture makes it easier to see all the details. Wanna try new stereogram technique (MTS)? - [link]

yes. Search for a free (pc based program) called stereocreator. It's pretty easy to use, however, you will also need a program like 3ds max, or Bryce, to insert your own models into it. In most 3d programs there is a render solution called z-depth, which assigns a color gradient dependent on zplane topology (that's just a fun way of saying that the shit that's closest to you is white, and the stuff further away gradually turns black). This is the map that stereo creator uses. Hope that was somewhat helpful. If you can't find it easily, I'll ftp it somewhere and send you a link.

i tried a few others, but it was really hard to see. Sometimes it's a just a matter of finding the right picture with the correct color scheme. Glad you can see it though. Not everyone can.

thank you mang. I've seen so many of these done incorrectly, and now after making one I understand why. Lot's of people got a hold of this program called stereo, and think once they load in a depth map, and a texture file that that's it. truth is, to get a really nice effect, you need to do a little math, and finesse it. Also I've seen plenty of these with improperly mapped depth maps. My eyes seriously hurt for a day after making this.

I used to have a program that was meant for making these Magic Eye pictures. though I think it produced very rough textures for the normally visible picture. What kind of a setup are you using for the calculation? This one doesn't seem to be entirely working for me (I can see some 3D stuff, but it doesn't "pop up" completely), but my headache could be hindering it.

Yeah these will give you a major headache, if you didn't already have one. in 3ds MAX when you do a render, you can add a render parameter called z-depth. z-depth will basically apply a white to black gradient to your model representing it's depth. There are 2 variables associated with z-depth that govern it Mindepth and Maxdepth. these are where the fine tuning comes into play. the stereo program has the same parameters, and they must be played with a lot to get the best effect. After a night of screwing around with it, this was the best one I got. ^^

thanks for looking, and I hope your headache goes away soon.
